About
Juan B Plaza

Juan B. Plaza is a multi-faceted artist who started his journey with delicate China ink on paper drawings (www.doctorwiggls.com) and later moved to larger, more colorful pieces in search of what he calls “The Wow Factor!” in which viewers are attracted to the sheer brilliance of the colors, just to discover the perspective ruses and mind games that are so characteristic of his work. Juan is attracted to textile patterns and drastic combinations of large areas of black and white background and then an explosion of cleverly situated color. Apart from being an artist Juan is an avid cook, a commercial pilot, a Geodetic Engineer, an MBA in International Finance, a Bonsai enthusiast, carpenter, a surfboard shaper and a musical enthusiast of progressive rock. Juan combines all these disparate interests in his art, surprising us with color combinations and phrases that have little to do with traditional art.

Doctor Wiggl’s Ph.D. is a genderless character that refuses to be one dimensional.

One of the activities that have marked Juan’s life in more profound ways is surf and the joy that comes from shaping and building surfboards. In the early 70s Juan spent time in California as apprentice at the Infinity Surfboard shop in Huntington Beach, CA. Upon his return to Venezuela, he founded Kuyagua Surfboards (www.kuyagua.com) and spent the next ten years shaping boards for the growing generation of Venezuelan surfers who demanded boards that were suited for the fast and short waves of the Caribbean Sea.

The way Juan came into art is not the traditional path. Juan is an engineer, a pilot, a sales manager, a cook, but he never thought of himself as an artist. Juan was a sales director for a large corporation on a business trip to South America when, during an end-of-quarter call with 15 colleagues all over the world, he started doodling and the result surprised him in a way that would change his life forever. Hours later he went looking for an art supply store and bought a set of German engineering pens, rulers and a beautiful creamy paper that would be the signature image of his delicate drawings. After drawing for a year, one day a character emerged as a messenger for his art and Dr. Wiggl’s was born out of a necessity to delegate his artistic endeavors to a more suitable voice. After more than 250 originals, Juan continues to enjoy his artistic association with Dr. Wiggl’s and its multiple PhDs.
